Family Enterprise

Check out Al's blog. She writes about their kids business called "Happy Homemade Bagels"

A couple of years ago, the gals in our family started baking New York Bagels. Even I got good at it and there is not a better Bagel in Salt Lake City. I had to give it up because of weight considerations; but they are really good plain and covered with all sorts of goodies.

Camile, Emilie's daughter. learned how to do it and had a little business going. Becca also bakes a pile of bagels and now Al and her kids.

James,9, the principle salesman of Happy Homemade Bagels, does the weighing of the ingredients, others help with the baking. He made a little flyer and went door to door in the neighborhood and developed several steady customers. He calls them each week and asks, "Are you going to reorder Bagels this week? Can we improve our service?" They end up baking 8 to 9 dozen Bagels which is a lot of work.

IT is cool that the kids do some work. We tried to have our kids, as you all well remember, do some productive work and each did something that earned income and was worthwhile. Of all the projects, Doug and Bry did a asphalt driveway sealing project called "Designer Driveways" when they were in High School and made a ton of money and even sold the business at the end. All had jobs, some did "Designer Babysitting" and I am glad to see that the grand kids are doing the same.

Natalie, Rachele and Douglas all earned some money as movie extras this summer in the filming of "High School Musical" which was done at East High.

Good luck.."Happy Homemade Bagels" .. Love, Dad

I'm glad we don't have Becca's Bagels competition in Salt Lake because they don't come any better than from Becca's oven.

It has been a lot of work but I think the kids will really appriciate the computer programing Lego set they are saving up for.

If you ever get the craving and don't want to mess up your kitchen you can always buy a few off the boys

Do your kids and grandkids deliver out of state too?

Hey Dad ---It's Caroline that sells the bagels. She calls her business Caroline's Boutique Bagels. She has 4 regular customers. Natalie and Rachel are also certified referees for soccer and make 16 dollars a game.

Becca's bagels look amazing!!!

Kelsey, I am sworn to secrecy by a band of daughters.

Thre is a great bread book called "The Best Bread Ever" by Van Over. You might find one on Amazon... that covers it well.

Emily.. thanks for the correction..I have a hard time keeping track of all the grnadkidbusinesses. Caroline was an industrious Bagel Maker and set the example.

My bagels buisness in Texas last year was pretty good. It was a lot of work and my kitchen got so hot in the summer, but I had fun doing it. I'm not sure that it would do as well in Michigan since there are so many bagel places.

Also, Bry is still doing "Designer Driveways" on the side.

Those bagels look great!

Those bagels do look good. It has been a while since I have made any. I made a batch for Lake Powell and Bear Lake, but that is it. I have had friends and neighbors asking about the bagels. My max bagel day was the one pictured here: 160 bagels and 4 loaves of sourdough bread.

The Young women in our ward had an auction a few months ago. I donated 5 dozen bagels (that I still need to make and deliver). They were auctioned for $20 each dozen. So I helped the girls make some money for girls camp.
